Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
What would we do if we could use the Pirelli Calendar to retell Lewis Carroll’s classic story, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, as a celebration of not just equality, but black excellence?
After the iconic Pirelli Calendar was given a new twist by Annie Leibowitz in 2016 and Peter Lindbergh in 2017, the 2018 Calendar was fiercely anticipated. Tasked with building on the successes of the two previous years, we assisted Pirelli with finding an appropriate voice and position for its 45th edition.
Photographed through the fantastical lens of Tim Walker, styled by British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful and with set design by Mission-favourite Shona Heath, the classic tale of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland took on a completely unique form in this dazzling shoot, held over several days in London. The blockbuster cast (Naomi Campbell and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs as the Royal Beheaders; RuPaul as the Queen of Hearts; Lupita Nyong’o as the Dormouse; Whoopi Goldberg as the Royal Duchess; Adwoa Aboah as Tweedledee, and rising star Duckie Thot as Alice – the list goes on) brought to life Lewis Carroll’s original sketches, playing on the exaggerated sizing and playful flourishes in true Walker style.
